’Tis ‘The Holiday’ Season To Be In ‘Love Actually’ with an ‘Elf’
A look at my three favorite Christmas movies
My list of My Top Favorite Christmas Movies has changed over the years. For most of my life, I’d have put It’s A Wonderful Life, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, and A Very Brady Christmas (no, I’m not joking — I love The Brady Bunch) high up on my list.
I still enjoy all of them (especially the Home Alone movies!), but I don’t watch them each and every Christmas season like I used to.
One “classic” that a lot of people love, but it never knocked me out, though, is A Christmas Story. It’s fine, but I just don’t think it’s as wonderful as most other people seem to. It’s never been a favorite of mine and it’s unlikely I’ll ever watch it again.
Sorry, Ralphie. Go play with your BB gun and stick your tongue on a frozen pole. Have a blast. Just do it all without me, kid.
However, I’m not here today just to bash A Christmas Story. I’m also here to share my current Top Three Favorite Christmas Movies.
In no particular order of preference, here they are:
The Holiday
The Holiday is a fantastic romantic comedy from 2006 that stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black. My wife and I watch it just about every Christmas season.
We also sometimes watch it at other random times throughout the year.
It’s funny, it’s moving, and it’s sweet.
It’s got a great story and a great cast. Speaking of the latter, I should also mention actors Eli Wallach and Rufus Sewell, who are both exceptional in supporting roles.
Love Actually
This great film has an amazing ensemble cast that includes Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, and Keira Knightly.
It has several different storylines in it. Some are comedic, some dramatic, some romantic, and some that combine a little bit of all of those things.
I first saw it not long after it was released in 2003 and I instantly loved it. Many years before meeting and marrying in 2014, I dated a couple of other far, far inferior women who told me that they absolutely despised Love Actually.
To each their own, of course, but I knew those relationships were doomed when I found out those women hated the movie. They just weren’t romantic enough for me!
Love Actually makes me laugh, it gives me warm feelings, and it even makes me cry a few “happy tears” during a couple of scenes.
Like I said above — I love it.
Elf
This classic comedy from 2003 stars Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Asner, and Bob Newhart.
What’s not to love about this one?
It’s funny, it’s charming, and it’s made me feel good every single time I’ve ever seen it — which has been a lot!
It will probably always be my favorite movie starring Will Ferrell. He’s perfect in this one — as is the rest of the cast also.
